San Antonio Spurs’ guard, Devin Vassell, has agreed to a five-year, $146 million contract extension, as confirmed by agents Andrew Morrison, Rich Beda, and Mitch Nathan of CAA Sports on Monday.
This rookie-scale contract extension places Vassell firmly among the Spurs’ core group of promising young players, cementing his future with the team.
At the age of 23, Vassell becomes the sixth player from his 2020 NBA draft class to secure an extension, joining the likes of Anthony Edwards (Minnesota), LaMelo Ball (Charlotte), Tyrese Haliburton (Indiana), Isaiah Stewart (Detroit), and Desmond Bane (Memphis).
Selected as the 11th overall pick in the 2020 draft from Florida State, Vassell was on a trajectory towards a breakout third NBA season until a knee injury in January sidelined him for two months.
Throughout his three NBA seasons, Vassell consistently improved his scoring, with his average rising from 5.5 points to 12.3 in 2021-22 and culminating at 18.5 points in the last season.
Notably, Vassell excelled in catch-and-shoot 3-pointers, ranking among the top 15 players in catch-and-shoot 3-point field goal percentage among the 170 players who attempted at least 150 such shots, according to Second Spectrum tracking.
